Elena Soterkis
I received my BFA from The School of Visual Arst, in New York City and studied paintings in Paris, France, and Florence, Italy at the Polimodo under Andrea Gennaro, a professor at the Acedemia Belli Arte Di Firenze. Upon graduation I returned to Italy, for a year, to further pursue my painting, where I adopted Renaissance Painting techniques into my work, including the “sight size method” and glazing techniques. I paint with oil on maple wood panels, beginning with an umber under -painting, building layer upon layer of color glazes, creating the illusion of light.
Afflicted with wander lust, I created a body of work documenting my travels abroad in cities such as, Venice, Rome, Brussels, and Amsterdam. Upon returning to the United States, I became increasingly fascinated with the Southwest, traveling to New Mexico, creating an entirely new series of landscape paintings, unlike any of the work I painted before.
I am a member of the Huntington Arts Council and the Long Island City’s Woman Studio Center. This November I will be having a month long solo exhibition, “Silent Beauty” at the Huntington Library Gallery that will feature twenty of my most recent paintings, ranging from “Tuscan Landscapes” to “Abandoned Urban Landscapes” I have exhibited in Group shows at The Krasdale Galleries in White Plains and at La Veulta Café in Long Island City.
I have recently donated works to Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Holiday Card Program that also features the work of artists Andres Serrano and Chris Bartlett; Streethaven at the Crossroads, in Toronto, Canada; and The Robert Di Libero Foundation.
Currently, I am painting fulltime in my studio located in Great Neck. I am interested in both figurative and non-figurative work. I accept commissions ranging from Corporate Portraits to Long Island Landscapes.
